Nigeria has made little progress towards reducing child mortality – Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4. According to the UN mortality estimates, Nigeria has achieved only an average of 1.2% reduction in under-five mortality per year since 1990. To meet MDG 4, Nigeria will need to achieve an annual reduction rate of 10% from now until 2015 This report presents a summary of some key findings on neonatal and under-five mortality in Nigeria. Implementable priority actions before pregnancy, during pregnancy and for postnatal care are also proposed in order to meet the MDG goal 4 by 2015.
