Summary Findings of Cross-sectional Nutrition Surveys in Northern Nigeria, December 2010

This study present the summary of a cross-section anthropometric and mortality survey undertaken 8 different states in Northern Nigeria. The main objective was to determine nutritional status of children under five years of age and women of reproductive age group. The prevalence of GAM was found to be highest in Sokoto and Borno states at 12.6% and 5.1% respectively. 21 cases of bilateral edema was reported. Underweight was highest and lowest in Katsina and Borno at 44.9% and 24.9% respectively. Stunting was found to be above 50% in all states above Borno. The highest and lowest being in Jigawa (68.4%) and Borno (44.3%) respectively. Vitamin A coverage was found to be highest in Kebbi state (97.3%) and lowest in Yobe state (13.7%) Deworming coverage was found to be highest in Katsina (72.9%) and lowest in Yobe state (5.9%) Mortality rates in all states were found to be below the average baseline for sub-saharan Africa.
