Trends, measurements and indicators
The rapid spread of the HIV epidemic revealed the limited nature of our knowledge of sexual behaviour. Identification of trends in sexual ill-health relies upon a range of data. Recent decades have seen important developments in our understanding of the strengths and limitations of particular kinds of measures, as well as in our appreciation of the sensitivity and relevance of different methods of data collection. As a result, sexual health data has improved, both in terms of quantity and quality. Understanding of sexual health has also increased, for example, in relation to the epidemiology of HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and patterns of sexual behaviour.
