Limitations of ARVs
Questions persist about the feasibility of providing ARV treatment to large numbers of people in resource-limited settings. Concerns raised often include:
- the negative impact that the severe side-effects of HIV drugs and the complexity of treatment have on the ability of people to adhere to their ART regime;
- the unknown long-term impact of the drug toxins;
- the complex nutritional impact on, and needs, of people on ART
- the scarcity of necessary trained health care providers;
- and insufficent infrastructure to monitor patients
