The female condom is the only new prevention technology invented and approved since the advent of the HIV and AIDS epidemic and the sole female initiated protective method currently available. While microbicides also offer the possibility of a female initiated protective method, they are currently being developed and are not yet available to use.
The addition of the female condom to a country's contraceptive mix is not intended to replace the male condom but to increase the number of protected sex acts. That need becomes even more critical when women are not in a position to negotiate the use of a male condom due to personal and cultural constraints. With HIV prevalence continuing to rise and women increasingly shouldering the burden of HIV and AIDS, the need for female initiated prevention methods cannot be over-emphasised.
