Understanding sex work

Sexual services are sold in diverse settings. In some countries there are large brothels or whole areas of cities given over to the sex industry. In other places, sex work occurs in hotels, bars, truck stops and on the streets.

The emergence of cheap communications technologies means that mobile phones and the Internet are used by sex workers to organise their working lives.

While most sex workers operate within structured sex industries and treat sex work as a job, others operate when the opportunity arises and see it as just one kind of income generating strategy among others.
