Knowledge gaps
A number of knowledge gaps need to be explored. Some of these gaps include:
  • vulnerability - How do inequalities and differences in power impact upon vulnerability to infection and vulnerability to impacts of HIV and AIDS in both high and low prevalence contexts? When should HIV and AIDS be the primary focus and when should we look to broader vulnerabilities? How do we make HIV, AIDS and development responses more focused and relevant to actual dynamics of the epidemic over both the short and the long term?
  • rights and citizenship - How do conflicting sets of rights influence the response? How can various forms of citizenship engage with emerging challenges? How can people living with HIV and AIDS, and other affected groups best be mobilised around relevant identities to respond, to contribute, to claim rights and to negotiate for resources?
  • long wave shocks - How can we learn from other comparable events? How can the state and society respond to the long-term impacts and dynamics of HIV and AIDS?
  • policy processes - What roles do existing actors play? Who have we missed? How can national government and local actors influence the response to HIV and AIDS and interact with global actors? How can global actors and networks better support local change, and, engage local counterparts to collectively influence global policy from the bottom-up?

Knowledge is power
We need to find better ways to make existing and future knowledge accessible and relevant to everyone. This includes knowledge generated at the front lines of the response to HIV and AIDS; more detached knowledge generation and knowledge about policy processes. We also need to learn how to generate learning from local adaptations and make it widely available.
