MSMGF Technical Bulletin: Topical (Microbicide) Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

This technical bulletin focuses on Topical PrEP is the use of a microbicide—a gel, lubricant, douche, or enema infused with antiretrovirals (ARVs)—applied to the vagina and/or rectum in order to prevent sexual transmission of HIV. This bulletin includes information on recent research and overall knowledge of PrEP amongst MSM. This bulletin also provides information on considerations and limitations of systemic PrEP as an HIV prevention strategy for MSM.
