The one to watch: Radio, new ICTs and interactivity

Linking Radio and ICT's in development communication

Authors: Bruce Girard; FAO; Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES)
Publisher: Sustainable Development Department, FAO SD Dimensions, 2003

This publication provides an overview of the most significant experiences in applying radio and ICTs to sustainable development. It presents case studies showing the convergence of radio and new ICTs for development, and the book underscores the significant potential of the combination.

Among the possibilities explored:

  • Broadcasters now have instant access to the Internet for research
  • National, regional and global radio news agencies are making world news and alternative perspectives available to even the most remote communities
  • The radio/telecommunications combination is helping to keep communities together, despite the distances imposed by migration.

The book collects together essays focusing on:

  • concepts and context important for understanding and analysing radio and Internet projects
  • case studies of radio and ICT projects, looking at networking projects, community intermediary or gateway projects, and projects connecting migrants with their home communities.
  • situating rural radio in a historical perspective, considering the development of the medium in Africa over the past half century and over a span of almost 100 years in the USA
  • examples from Latin America illustrate how a “typical” rural radio station works to fulfil a community’s day to day communication needs
