The media self-regulation guidebook

A look at self regulation for journalists and others working in the media

Authors: M. Haraszti
Publisher: Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe , 2008

Media self-regulation refers to a joint endeavour by media professionals to set up voluntary editorial guidelines and abide by them in a learning process open to the public. By doing so, the independent media accept their share of responsibility for the quality of public discourse, while fully preserving their editorial autonomy in shaping it.

This guidebook provides questions and answers on a range of practical concerns around self-regulation including:

  • how existing self regulatory mechanisms work
  • what challenges they face
  • how to establish or enhance them.
There is no "one fits all" model therefore each chapter highlights particular aspects of media self-regulation, including the role of codes of ethics and various accountability mechanisms, such as ombudsman and press councils. These chapters are intended to allow the user to put together a context specific model.
