The field guide to photography

Tips and techniques for taking photographs in the field

Authors:
Publisher: Research into Use Programme, 2009

An issue often faced by NGOs is the lack of access to free or low cost photography for use in the production of communication materials. This guide seeks to provide guidance on how organisation can take their own photographs. It was written for researchers, extension workers, project managers and anyone else who works in disseminating research results and work on development projects.

The authors argue that good photographs help in fund raising, as they show donors what is being done with their money. In addition taking your own photographs also saves project resources – a professional photographer is an expensive luxury, and buying pictures from commercial providers can be very costly.

Tips and tricks are provided on how to take a good photograph. Chapters include:

  • Why learn to take good photographs?
  • What makes a good photograph?
  • A good camera
  • Remembering what makes a good picture
