This illustrated handbook, published by Pathfinder International, provides community health workers with a practical user-friendly tool that can be used as reference material, and also during skills transfer to clients and caregivers.
This training course and handbook is designed to provide a broad range of health care workers with the skills and sensitivity needed provide quality community home-based care (CHBC). Topics covered, among others, include:
• Communication—with individuals and in groups
• Giving information on HIV prevention
• Nursing and physical therapy
• Giving information on nutrition
• Listening
• Emotional support
• Giving non-clinical Family Planning (FP) methods
• Community mobilization
• Referral and follow-up
• Transferring knowledge and teaching skills to others
• Record keeping and reporting
Although this handbook is primarily based on Pathfinder’s experience in sub-Saharan Africa, it is intended to provide a global model for CHBC, which can be adapted into local contexts as needed. Additionally, this handbook is intended for use by community health workers who participate in a training workshop, and can be used both during the course and as reference material after the course is over to remember key ideas around CHBC when working in the community and teaching caregivers.
