In the Bengali- speaking nation of Bangladesh today are a small number of Urdu speakers. Many have been there for generations having migrated from the State of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal in Indian colonial times. This short policy brief identifies some of the present barriers to effective citizenship. The authors examine the community’s hopes, fears and aspirations. It recommends the steps which need to be taken to address the issue of citizenship and examines key issues in achieving this.
These current barriers to effective citizenship include:
- employment
- education
- voting rights
- healthcare
- property rental/ bank accounts and passports
Recommendations to tackles these issues include:
- mobilising society and building awareness
- public announcements of status
- reintegration with the community.
