This briefing paper explores the current debates on urban environmental and ecological issues. The report outlines key studies on ecological urbanisation, the ecological footprint analysis, and new modes for engaging citizens and other stakeholders.
The report argues that there is an emerging consensus which includes:
- the need to explore how urbanisation can be more ecologically rooted in particular cities
- a concern that the well-being of future generations needs to be connected to that of current generations, including low-income urban dwellers who suffer very large and easily prevented environmental health burdens
- a need for analysis of how large impacts often stem from changes in people's (and politicians') everyday small decisions
- that politics is central to addressing urban environmental issues.
