2007 marks the beginning of a new urban era - for the first time, half of humanity will be living in towns and cities. This report provides an overview of the challenges, business opportunities and best practices in supplying adequate shelter that is socially and environmentally sustainable.

The authors contend that harnessing markets at the "bottom of the pyramid", or among the poorest populations, is key to overcoming problems of rapid urbanisation.

  • housing finance and real estate
  • energy and transport, and
  • information technology
