The lack of adequate research on poverty in Angola undermines the potential for designing effective policy for poverty reduction. This paper examines both the present status of and the institutional basis for poverty analysis in Angola. Subsequently, it outlines key areas where further support for poverty research is needed.

Key findings from the study identify:

  • a lack of sound national data in the form of a census or a national household survey of socioeconomic conditions
  • little qualitative research on social and cultural change in Angola during recent decades
  • generally inadequate research vital for poverty reduction interventions

The study establishes the need to build capacity for poverty research at both the institutional and individual level. Concrete policy recommendations include:

  • building capacity of the national statistical office
  • supporting the implementation of the 2007 National Household Survey
  • assisting in the creation of an annual poverty report
  • establishing a training centre for applied poverty research
  • providing funding to support younger social scientists
