This briefing paper considers the different ways in which trade affects development and global poverty, focusing particularly on the effects on economic integration on America. It points out that there are benefits to regional integration in the shape of NAFTA, for both the USA and Mexico, but that there are also drawbacks - that free trade is not a simple solution for development and that removing trade barriers can create both winners and losers.
Basic questions addressed in the brief are:
- how does the US engage in global trade? what are the relative benefits of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements?
- how do US trade policies affect poor countries? what are the impacts of tariffs etc
