Factsheet on combating congenital syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection. If left untreated it can lead to irreversible damage to the cardiovascular and nervous systems, cause stillbirths and miscarriages and can be transmitted to the unborn child. Syphilis still constitutes a huge public health burden in many middle and low income countries, hampering efforts to meet the Millennium Goals 4 and 5 on child and maternal health.
