World Commission on Dams (WCD)

Independent and international commission established in May 1998, aiming to undertake a global review of the development effectiveness of large dams and to develop internationally acceptable criteria and guidelines for future decision–making on dams.

Plan of work includes a survey of 150 dam projects and in depth case studies of projects in:

  • South Africa Gariep / Van der Kloof dams and Orange River [Pilot Study]
  • Brazil Tucurui Dam and Amazon/Tocantins River
  • Norway Glomma And Lågen River Basin
  • Pakistan Tarbela Dam and Indus River Basin
  • Thailand Pak Mun Dam and Mekong/Mun River Basins
  • Turkey Aslantas Dam and Ceyhan River Basin
  • USA Grand Coulee Dam and Columbia Basin
  • Zambia / Zimbabwe Kariba Dam and Zambezi River Basin
