HIV/AIDS: stigma, discrimination and human rights abuses

The World AIDS Campaign for the years 2002–2003 focuses on stigma, discrimination and human rights. This document provides a background and framework for that campaign.

The authors explore definitions and relationships between stigma, discrimination and consequent human rights abuses.

In considering responses, they outline key stakeholders and describe some examples of programmes around the world that have been successful in tackling stigma and discrimination. They discuss a number of interrelated strategies for success and conclude that 'work has to occur simultaneously on several fronts: communication and education to encourage better understanding; action and intervention to establish a more equitable policycontext; and legal challenge, where necessary, to bring to account governments, employers, institutions and individuals.'
