Saving lives, relieving suffering, protecting dignity: DFID’s humanitarian policy

Outlines DFID’s three priorities in humanitarian assistance

This policy statement details how DFID plans to prioritise and deliver its humanitarian work in the future, focusing on the poorest countries. The new policy lays out how the UK will work to become a better donor, increasing its support for innovative ways of providing rapid and timely financial support where it is most needed.

The policy document outlines three main goals of DFID humanitarian assistance:

  • improving the effectiveness of humanitarian responses by increasing the quality of humanitarian response
  • being a better donor by following Good Humanitarian Donorship principles and deliver adequate, predictable and flexible finance where it is most needed, and encourage other donors to do likewise
  • reduce risk and extreme vulnerability by engaging earlier and more effectively to reduce risk, and to provide political and economic security
