HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support across faith-based communities: an annotated bibliography of resources

A collection of resources for faith based organisations working on HIV/AIDS

The purpose of this bibliography is to describe and review resources that have proven useful to faith-based organizations addressing the HIV crisis in Africa. The authors state that there are two criteria for selection of materials reviewed here. The first is that they promote dignity and respect for people living with HIV. The second is that they provide correct HIV information. However, the materials have a wide range of perspectives about how to conduct HIV prevention and care, the spiritual basis for HIV activities, and the role of faith-based organizations in addressing HIV/AIDS.

The documents is divided into subject based areas on:

behaviour change
care and support
guidelines and recommendations

Each section describes projects and resources in that area and gives contact details.

Numerous reports have linked AIDS’ impacts on young people and their long term food insecurity, through, for instance, orphans’ failure to inherit property and resources; inability to retain rights to land which they are too young or inexperienced to farm; or interruption of intergenerational knowledge transfer following parental deaths.

Averting ‘New Variant Famine’ in Southern Africa: building food-secure rural livelihoods with AIDS-affected young people

Southern Africa is experiencing the world’s highest HIV prevalence rates alongside recurrent food crises. This has prompted scholars to hypothesise a 'New Variant Famine' in which inability to access food is driven by the effects of AIDS. In line with this, it has been suggested that the impacts of AIDS on young people today is likely to diminish their prospects of food security in adult life.
