Manual for value chain research on homeworkers in the garment industry
Manual for value chain research on homeworkers in the garment industry
Throughout the world, workers and their organisations are often unaware of the distant forces that control their livelihoods. The links between local producers and the global buyers are difficult and complex to uncover. Local producers are also unclear of how they compare with their competitors in other parts of the world regarding issues such as price, quality, speed, earnings or working conditions.
This manual uses mapping and value chain analysis to demonstrate how this type of information can be uncovered and used to improve earning opportunities. These research tools also help unravel the complex connections between activities in the formal and informal economy.
The manual has been written primarily for activists and practitioners with some research experience who are working with homeworkers in the garment industry. With some adaptations, it will also be useful for factory workers and their unions.
