Energy for tomorrow's world: acting now
Energy for tomorrow's world: acting now
Goals and strategies for energy providers
This 175-page book updates and revises the scenarios and conclusions in WEC's 1993 publication of the same name. It provides energy-related statistics, charts, graphs, trend data, analysis, and discussion reflecting on global developments affecting the energy industry.
A central focus of the book is the presentation of three key energy goals to accomplish by 2020:
- Energy accessibility: Defined as the provision of reliable and affordable modern energy services for which a payment is made.
- Energy availability: Defined as the quality, reliability, and continuity of energy supply
- Energy acceptability: Defined as producing and using energy resources in a manner that gains public acceptance and preserves the environment
Strategies for achieving these goals include ten policy actions that energy companies, policy-makers, governments, and energy-related institutions can undertake now. These are:
- reap the benefits of market reform and appropriate regulation
- keep all energy options open
- reduce the political risk of key energy project investments
- price energy to cover costs and ensure payment
- promote greater energy efficiency
- foster financing partnerships linked to environmental goals
- ensure affordable energy for the poor
- fund research, development and deployment
- advance education and public information
- make ethics a strong component of energy system governance
