World Bank reflections [on tourism]
World Bank reflections [on tourism]
World Bank should take on pro poor tourism policies
The author argues that the World Bank has been slow to develop astrategy that incorporates tourism to combat poverty and even slower in communicating what it has done in the field. This essay, based on a presentation made at the Bank, reflects on the international financing of sustainable tourism and suggests ways of making improvements.
Suggested changes are:
- increased transparency
- increased information and accessibility for tourism on the World Bank website
- stakeholder and especially local community input needs to be sought more creatively
- greater open exploration of failures in ecotourism projects as well as successes
