HIV/AIDS and education: a toolkit for Ministries of Education

This HIV/AIDS and education toolkit has been developed for mid- to senior level officials in Ministries of Education. It aims to promote HIV/AIDS preventive education and to increase understanding of the relationship between HIV/AIDS and education and the impact of HIV/AIDS on the system. It asserts that the education sector has a crucial role to play in the national response to the epidemic, HIV/AIDS prevention should not be left only to the health sector.

The toolkit provides fact sheets of information in the following areas which correspond to power point presentation slides:

• figures and basic facts about HIV/AIDS
• why government commitment is so critical
• the impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems
• what the education sector can and should do
• special issues and vulnerabilities
• what you can do next

The toolkit also includes case studies, a checklist and further readings.
