HIV prevention in maternal health services: programming guide
HIV prevention in maternal health services: programming guide
This guide, produced by EngenderHealth and UNFPA, aims to help public health policymakers, programme managers, and trainers address programming gaps in the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in maternal health services. It also aims to increase maternal health providers' capacity to provide HIV and STI prevention services and referrals for clients during pregnancy and shortly after birth (postpartum). The guide focuses on planning for the integration of HIV and STI prevention interventions into maternal health services. In particular, it looks at determining the most appropriate and feasible interventions, training staff in appropriate technical areas, and monitoring and evaluating prevention interventions geared toward pregnant and postpartum women.
The guide is divided into three main sections: programme planning, programme descriptions, and training topics. Key areas covered include: strategies for information, education and communication, counselling and outreach work; aetiologic and syndromic management of sexually transmitted infections; safer infant feeding and delivery practices; providing male friendly services; improving access for young pregnant women; and reducing stigma and discrimination.
