How to conduct a rapid nutrition situation assessment: a guide for health districts and sub-districts in South Africa

Assessing the situation: first step towards an integrated nutrition programme in South Africa

Produced by the Health Systems Trust, South Africa, this paper provides guidance on performing a nutrition situation assessment (NSA) as an important first step in implementing a national Integrated Nutrition Programme (INP). The INP approach is comprehensive, addressing the socio-economic, environmental, educational and health-related causes of undernutrition. Its main aim is to shift from a reliance on vertical feeding programmes to providing more comprehensive community and facility-based nutrition interventions, with an emphasis on participation. The document covers each step in conducting an NSA, from setting up and motivating a district nutrition team, establishing a framework for the NSA, identifying information needs, and collecting, analysing and disseminating information.

The paper stresses that the NSA can be an effective advocacy tool. It is also useful for future monitoring and evaluation of the INP, and for assisting in the development of a district health system. Its other benefits include helping to bring together different members of district health teams and multi-sectoral teams working on nutrition interventions. Conducting the NSA in a participatory manner can also be educational both for the district nutrition team and the community, and help encourage the involvement of groups such as women, poor people and young people.
