Media by and for youth and children

Young people and children in the media

This section of the fourth edition of the Gender and Media Diversity Journal contains a selection of articles exploring youth, children, and the media.  Specifially, it looks at issues including the participation of youth and children in creating programmes, learning media literacy, and bringing children's issues into the public eye for dialogue.

It consists of four articles, including:

  • "Celebrating youth media and proposing a way forward" by Mimi Brazeau: looks at how Plan West Africa has been engaging with children and communities to create radio programmes by and for young people to promote and protect children’s rights
  • "Child and youth participation in health media" by Daniel Walter: examines how involving children in media to raise awareness about health-related issues is not only essential to creating good programmes, but also to empowering young people to be active members of the community
  • "Media literacy for learners" by Sikhonzile Ndlovu: looks at the importance of equipping young people with the skills to look critically at the media as well as use it to their advantage, in order to create an active citizenry that does not passively consume the thousands of media messages that they are subjected to every day
  • "In Practice: together we’ll be ok - children in distress (CINDI)": gives a short overview of the foundation and work of CINDI.
