BRIDGE Report 58: Emerging Issues in Gender and Development: An Overview

This report looks at current developments in how development agencies are meeting the challenge of mainstreaming gender in the context of globalisation.

What are the current themes and approaches in gender and development? How are development agencies meeting the challenge of mainstreaming gender into development interventions in the context of globalisation? In 2000, the UN 23rd Special Session 'Beijing +5' provided an opportunity for reflection on progress towards implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. This report looks at key development processes and themes. It begins by looking at Sector-wide approaches (SWAPS) and efforts to mainstream gender through analysis, capacity-building, implementation, accountability and monitoring and evaluation. It then goes on to identify key themes and sectors including poverty, globalisation, ICTs, conflict, violence, men and masculinities, HIV/AIDS and human rights. Each section looks at measures that have been implemented to date to further gender equality by a range of bilateral and multilateral organisations, and by the OECD/DAC Working Party on Gender Equality (WP-GEN). The report also proposes areas of further work and ways forward.
