Consultation with Women's Rights Groups on the Beijing Platform for Action and the Millennium Declaration

A report on the results of a three-day consultation involving thirty women's organizations and networks from all regions of the world.

How can organisations working on gender coordinate their efforts and learn from each other? In December 2004 the Millennium Campaign , the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Heinrich B?ll Foundation organised a three-day consultation. Thirty women's organisations and networks from all regions of the world met in New York to brainstorm on how to work together at national, regional and global levels. The aim was to capitalise on the opportunities offered in 2005 by the ten-year review of the Beijing Platform for Action and the five-year review of progress in implementing the Millennium Declaration. On the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular, the participants agreed on the inadequacy of the targets and indicators relating to gender, the lack of participation by women in national and global MDGs processes, and the exclusion of reproductive rights and employment issues. Others shared concerns at the preoccupation with the security agenda and the backlash against women's rights. A top priority for 2005 is to revitalise the women's movement, including by building alliances with, for example, the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (G-CAP), trade movements and church groups.
