Gender and the Millennium Development Goals
Gender and the Millennium Development Goals
What are the strengths and weaknesses, from a gender perspective, of using the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to understand and address poverty? Contributors to this collection come from both sides of the debate, yet all seek to inspire readers to action. Some point to the hazards of restricting action to the current priorities set out in the MDG framework if women's full human rights are to be served. Others propose to analyse and address the shortcomings of the MDG framework using analytical tools familiar to feminist activists. This volume includes articles on: linking women's rights to the MDGs, including the link to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW); women's empowerment; maternal mortality; achieving gender equality through the curriculum; how women's movements are engaging with the MDG process; and a critique of the MDGs from a Caribbean perspective. A final 'Resources' section features publications, websites, electronic resources, tools for advocacy and a list of relevant organisations.
