A Client-centered Approach to Reproductive Health: A Trainer's Manual

This manual adopts an approach for bringing about behaviour-change in providers, making them more receptive and responsive to client needs.

How can reproductive health service providers deliver more client-centred services? This manual adopts an approach for bringing about behaviour-change in providers, making them more receptive and responsive to client needs. The approach, called SAHR, involves four interconnected steps: Salutation, Assessment, Help, and Reassurance. It teaches providers how to treat clients with respect and how to assess their reproductive health needs holistically within the context of their household circumstances. It also looks at coming up with solutions that clients are able to implement. The manual has three sections: section one is an overview of the contents; section two, the trainer's guide, is made up of the training modules; section three contains support materials to help trainers prepare for the sessions. Each module in section two describes the individual components of client-provider interaction and includes learning objectives, key learning points, a schedule and a list of materials required. Trainer notes and step-by-step instructions for each activity are also included. The approach was successfully tested in Pakistan in 2000-2002 and, with slight modifications, can be used in any setting or country.
