Japan's 5th periodic report on the implementation of the ?Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women? (CEDAW) covers the period May 1998 to April 2002. It was put together in consultation with a wide range of civil society groups. Part One sets out the situation of women in Japan and summarises the advancements made in policies and laws since the submission of the 4th periodic report in 1998. Full details are given in Part Two under each article of CEDAW. Areas of progress include the enactment of the Basic Law for a Gender-Equal Society in 1999, the revision of the Employment Insurance Law in 2000 to include a rise in childcare leave benefits and the amendment of the Law for the Prevention of Spousal Violence and the Protection of Victims of 2001 to recognise the counselling and protection roles of government women's centres. The report concludes with an extensive statistical annex giving figures on the situation of women in Japan.
