Community Centers for Community Development: A Case Study of Dhaka City

This article examines and reflects upon the Menstrual Health (MH) landscape and programming in Bangladesh, assessing the progress, challenges, and potential ways forward.

The complex nature of the challenge posed by state–society relations to the realisation of citizenship rights in the poorer countries of the world reflects the incapacity or unwillingness on the part of the state to guarantee basic security of life and livelihoods to its citizens and its proneness to capture by powerful elites that perpetuate this state of affairs.

This thematic portal examines how women engage with policy change, and the building of alliances and coalitions, to bring about accountability. It also contains information on how to create demand for, and dismantle obstacles to, women’s empowerment; and how to institutionalise and legitimise women’s empowerment in the policies, actions and populations of these institutions.

Asian cities have been central drivers of Asia’s economic growth in the last few decades. However, a democratic deficit in many small and medium size Asian cities means municipalities fail to deliver key service provisions to citizens, and civil society engagement in urban governance and institutions remains very limited.

Trust amongst people in a society is considered by many to facilitate long-term growth, educational attainment, democratic stability and subjective well-being. A low institutional trust environment can undermine inter-personal trust in the economy.
