The state of the world fisheries and aquaculture: opportunities and challenges
This report gives a global view of capture fisheries and aquaculture, including associated policy issues. The report finds that global fish production has grown steadily in the last five decades, with food fish supply increasing at an average annual rate of 3.2 percent, outpacing world population growth. In developing countries, fish consumption tends to be based on locally and seasonally available products, with supply driving the fish chain. However, fuelled by rising domestic income and wealth, consumers in emerging economies are experiencing a diversification of the types of fish available owing to an increase in fishery imports.
When it comes to climate change, the report describes six studies launched by the FAO in an attempt to start filling in the gape of relevant information about its impact on fisheries and aquaculture systems. The case studies looked at fisheries and aquaculture systems located across the world.
