Grenada national climate change policy and action 2007-2011

Existing climate variability and global climate change are major threats to sustainable development in the Caribbean, particularly for the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Hurricanes, storm surges and extreme rainfall events cause major damages to the assets of coastal populations, infrastructure and ecosystems.

This paper was commissioned by the Government of Grenada and provides information on the national circumstances relating to the implementation of the Barbados Plan of Action including obstacles directly related to climate change mainstreaming.

This paper provides an analysis of the current watershed, water resources and coastal zone management issues in Grenada pursuant to Grenada’s obligations on the Global Environment Facility approved Project entitled “Integrating Management of Watersheds and Coastal Areas in Small Island Watersheds and Coastal Areas in Small Island Developing States in the Caribbean.

Small scale fisheries, critical to the livelihoods, coastal economies and food security of coastal communities, are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

This report presents the Disaster Risk Management Framework in Grenada and the linkages to the agricultural sector as well as examples of good practice in this area. The following principles became much more relevant and important to stakeholders as a result of this project.
