What contributions does the software industry make to India's economy? Is India's experience relevant to other countries? The Information Technology (IT) industry in India is growing at nearly 80 percent a year. Research at the University of Reading shows that IT not only contributes to economic growth but also provides employment and education opportunities. The industry is poorly linked to other parts of the economy, however and benefits are not felt equally by everyone. The study looks at how the Indian and other developing country governments can ensure that IT gains reach beyond urban high- tech centres.
