The power of local institutions to deal with resource management in India is being eroded and yet community initiative and participation are increasingly seen as central to environmental regeneration. The irrigation, forestry and pasture sectors have witnessed innovative community initiatives and the increasing involvement of local institutions. Research at the University of Wales, Swansea, examined community resource management of tank irrigation in south India, focusing on the social, economic and demographic factors involved. What precisely is needed to set up successful common resource management systems in India today?
