USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

EPA offers databases gopher, WWW and discussion lists (see separate entry), all from a USA perspective. Site includes background information on EPA programmes/activities, full text of consumer, research and management documents, information on EPA databases and software. Information services include:

(a) Hazardous Waste Database (HAZW) is a copy of the dbase hazardous waste collection that is administered by EPA headquarters, containing references to key materials on hazardous waste in the EPA library network. Bibliographic descriptions, keywords, abstracts, locations and other information are listed for books, EPA reports, Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) policy and guidance directives, periodicals and commercial databases containing information on hazardous waste

(b) Environmental Financing Network (EFIN) provides information on financing alternatives for US State and local environmental programs and projects primarily in the form of abstracts of publications, case studies, and contacts. EFIN abstracts and case studies outline successful financing alternatives while contact profiles refer users to program experts (e.g. Government officials) and non-profit organisations familiar with public financing and environmental programs.

(c) Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS): database on US air quality, emissions and compliance data

(d) Toxic Release Inventory (TRI): report on USA annual releases of toxic chemicals into the environment. Accessible online via Toxnet (see separate entry)

(e) National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES): reports on discharge of waste water

(f) Human Health and Ecotoxicity Database (HHED): index of toxicological potency of chemicals

(g) Library holdings databases for various EPA libraries

(h) Chemical Collection System (CHEM) contains citations for items relating to chemicals.

(i) TRIAGE: ranking system for chemicals based on level of toxicity, with referral information to studies on chemical. Available on registration via CEDAR (see separate entry)

(j) Vendor Information System for Innovative Treatment Technologies (VISITT): information on innovative treatment technology for the remediation of contaminated sites. Available on registration via CEDAR (see separate entry)

(k) Envirofacts: compilation of four EPA databases (RCRIS, TRIS, CERCLIS and PCS) with supervisory/monitoring data on industrial pollution in the USA.

(l) Email distribution lists for a subject-based listing of new publications which appear in the USA federal register: see gopher/WWW server for further information
