Economic and Social Committee, European Union (ESC / ECS)
Offical Body advising the EU's decision-making bodies (the Commission, the Council and, in the near future, the European Parliament) at their request about practically all matters dealt with in the Union. The Committee also carries out work on its own initiative. The ESC issues some 170 opinions a year. The Committee initiated discussions on the adoption of a European Social charter. In recent years the Committee has adopted opinions on such crucial European issues as employment, the Euro and the single market.
