Institute of Asia Pacific Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS)

The Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (IAPS) is a government funded, academic and policy oriented research institute in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) that specializes in Asia-Pacific studies. It focuses mainly on issues of contemporary politics, economic development, foreign relations, social and cultural issues, as well as regional integration and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Institute’s research is organized into four main departments:

  1. Department of Economic Studies, which conducts research on economic issues with a special focus on East Asian economic development, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), East Asian cooperation and China's economic relations with the countries in the region
  2. Department of Security & Foreign Relations, which studies regional security issues and foreign relations, giving special attention to China’s security environment and relations with neighboring countries
  3. Department of Political & Social Studies
  4. Department of Culture Studies, which has special programs on South Asian culture

The institute also has an Editorial Department which is responsible for the publication of the journal, ‘Contemporary Asia-Pacific Studies’ and other publications.
