    Southern Africa suffered severe drought in 2001 and 2002. In some areas food aid took a year to arrive. But, whilst hunger did occur, the predicted severe famine did not. Women played an important role in preventing starvation.

    Communal tenure and rural poverty: reflections on land transactions in Svosve communal area, Zimbabwe

    This paper examined the effect of the land reforms policy of 2000-2002 on rural poverty in Zimbabwe. The thrust of the reform policy is to redistribute land for equitable access as a strategy for poverty alleviation. The policy framework provided a distinction between ‘commercial’ land governed by a land market and ‘communal’ land on which market transactions are illegal.
