Land tenure and fast-tracking REDD+: time to reframe the debate?
Global Canopy Programme, 2013This paper argues that legal reform of land tenure will not take place fast enough to enable developing countries to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation through REDD+. It highlights that a global agreement on REDD+ is needed by 2020, if the mechanism is to have a significant impact on mitigating climate change.DocumentGreen economy and trade: trends, challenges and opportunities
United Nations [UN] Environment Programme, 2013Prepared by the Trade, Policy and Planning Unit of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this report is a key component of the Green Economy and Trade Opportunities Project (GE-TOP). The aim of GE-TOP is to identify opportunities and barriers inherent in a transition to a green economy, and to assist all stakeholders to build capacity.DocumentPutting the pieces together for good governance of REDD+: an analysis of 32 REDD+ country readiness proposals
World Resources Institute, Washington DC, 2013The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility Readiness Fund and the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD) are supporting capacity building efforts in preparation from REDD+ implementation.DocumentImpacts of environmental degradation and climate change on electricity generation in Malawi
International Energy and Environment Foundation, 2013This paper explores the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change on electricity generation in Malawi. Hydropower provides almost all of the country's electricity; a reliance on freshwater supply makes it a highly vulnerable energy source to climate change and environmental degradation.DocumentMobilizing climate investment: the role of international climate finance in creating scaled-up low-carbon energy
2013It is estimated that developing countries need US$ 531 billion per year additional investment in energy supply and demand technologies, between now and 2050, in order to limit global temperature rise to two degrees above pre-industrial levels.DocumentCarbon stocks of tropical coastal wetlands within the karstic landscape of the Mexican Caribbean
PLoS ONE, 2013As one of the most carbon (C) rich ecosystems in the world, the conservation and restoration of tropical wetlands represent a priority for climate change mitigation. Deforestation, agri/aqua culture conversion, pollution and coastal development have all contributed to the loss of over one-third of mangroves in the last fifty years; a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.DocumentAfrica environment outlook 3: our environment, our health
United Nations [UN] Environment Programme, 2013The Africa Environment Outlook (AEO) is a tool of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) for monitoring environmental management in Africa.DocumentClimate legislation study: a review of climate change legislation in 33 countries (third edition)
GLOBE International, 2013This review of climate change legislation in 33 countries shows that developing countries are leading action on climate change. Overall, there has been significant progress in the climate and/or energy-related legislation of almost all major economies, but a great amount of the 2012 effort took place in emerging countries.DocumentReducing inequality and poverty while mitigating climate change: key challenges for research and practice in middle-income countries in Africa and Latin America
Energy Research Centre, University of Cape Town (UCT), 2012This working paper, produced by the Mitigation Action Plans and Scenarios (MAPS) programme, investigates the relationship between emissions, inequality and poverty in middle-income countries in Africa and Latin America. Research on this topic is of particular importance, since changing global demographics mean that the majority of the world's poor now live in middle-income countries.DocumentGoverning the forests: an institutional analysis of REDD+ and community forest management in Asia
International Tropical Timber Organization, 2013This report examines the history, structure and monitoring mechanisms of REDD+ to better understand how it impacts upon, and interacts with, Community Forest Management (CFM). It presents case studies of CFM and REDD+ governance from Bangladesh, Indonesia and India, and concludes with some lessons learned.Pages
