Impact of climate and land use changes on water and food security in Jordan: implications for transcending 'the tragedy of the commons'

    2013
Jordan is dominated by arid climate with limited arable land and water resources. This study focuses on crop production and water resources under trends of anticipated climate change and population growth to analyse how these affect water and food security in the country. It finds that recession of irrigated areas led to lesser food production and food security.

Counting the costs: replacing pastoralism with irrigated agriculture in the Awash valley, north-eastern Ethiopia

International Institute for Environment and Development, 2013
For planning purposes, it is important to not only determine the economic viability of a development scheme, but also that it produces economic benefits that exceed those that were already being obtained from the pre-existing production systems. This study undertakes these calculations with regards to grazing lands on the banks of the Awash river in north-eastern Ethiopia.

Farmers' adaptation initiatives to the impact of climate change on agriculture in northern Nigeria

African Journals Online - AJOL, 2012
This study examines the innovative adaptive measures used by farmers in northern Nigeria to respond to the effects of climate change. Quantitative and qualitative approaches (rapid rural appraisal, focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews) were used to gather information from 500 farmers.

Climate and food production: understanding vulnerability from past trends in Africa's Sudan-Sahel

    Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2013
This case study from Cameroon's Sudan-Sahel region explores the impact of rainfall on agricultural production and the evidence that supports small-scale farming as a strategy to reduce the vulnerability of crop yields to rainfall variation in the region. Climate data for 20 years and crop production data for six major food crops for the same years are used to identify patterns of correlation.

Analysis of climate change impacts on coffee, cocoa and basic grains value chains in northern Honduras

Instituto de Estudios del Hambre (Institute of Hunger Studies), 2013
This study examines, applying future climate local scenarios, climate change impacts in northern Honduras and makes recommendations to strengthen the resilience of the International Fund for Agricultural Development’s (IFAD) ‘Northern Horizons’ project beneficiaries in the coffee, cocoa, maize and bean value chains.

Climate adaptation as mitigation: the case of agricultural investments

    IOPscience, 2013
This paper argues that successful adaptation of agriculture to ongoing climate changes would help to maintain productivity growth and reduce pressure to bring new lands into agriculture. It explores the potential co-benefits of adaptation in terms of the avoided emissions from land use change.

Climate change and food security: the role of biotechnology

African Journals Online - AJOL, 2012
The negative effects of climate change on agriculture and food security depend not only on changing climate conditions, but also on the agricultural sector’s ability to adapt through changes in technology and demand for food.

Rural households in a changing climate

    World Bank, 2013
This World Bank policy research working paper investigates household-level strategies for adapting to climate change in rural settings, looking particularly at the adaptive capacity of poor rural households – a subject the authors claim has received little attention due to its broad and complex nature.

A critical analysis of climate change factors and its projected future values in Delta state, Nigeria

Asian Journal of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2013
This study analyses climate change factors (temperature and rainfall) and their projected future values in the Delta state, Nigeria. A variety of crops such as maize, yam and cassava produced in Delta state depend on rainfall for their optimum performance. Therefore, decreasing and/or irregular rainfall patterns threaten food security in the state.
