A statistically predictive model for future monsoon failure in India
IOPscience, 2012Indian summer monsoon (ISM) rainfall is the major prerequisite of agricultural productivity in the region and its variability severely affects the livelihoods of a large share of the world’s population. While average ISM rainfall has been relatively stable during the past century, rising trends have been observed in the annual number of extreme rain events.DocumentWhere the rain falls: climate change, food and livelihood security, and migration
United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security, 2012This comparative study highlights that rainfall variability and food insecurity are key drivers for human mobility. The empirical research is based on eight country case studies, including a 1,300 household survey and participatory research sessions involving 2,000 individuals. The results reveal that migration is an important risk management strategy for vulnerable households.DocumentChallenges and prospects for REDD+ in Africa: desk review of REDD+ implementation in Africa - a GOFC-ACRENET synthesis
Global Land Project, 2012This report reviews the status of REDD+ implementation in Africa, identifying forest degradation as one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. The research lists current projects in Africa to build a database of REDD initiatives and their status of implementation.OrganisationGlobal Land Project (GLP)
The Global Land Project is a research initiative of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP).DocumentAnalysing vulnerability: a multi-dimensional approach from Colombia’s upper Cauca river basin
Climate and Development Knowledge Network, 2012In Colombia, agriculture is an economic mainstay, creating direct employment for much of the country’s population. Agriculture’s dependence on predictable seasonal patterns leaves many communities vulnerable to climate change.DocumentEvidence from the frontlines of climate change: loss and damage to communities despite coping and adaptation
United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security, 2012This study presents empirical findings from fieldwork around the world examining loss and damage caused by global warming. The report begins by defining and contextualising the emerging discourse on assessing, quantifying and reacting to loss and damage. Key findings from the five case study sites include the following.DocumentUnderstanding adaptive capacity: sustainable livelihoods and food security in coastal Bangladesh
Climate Change Agriculture Food Security, 2012This paper analyses data from a household-level survey of 980 agricultural and fishing households in seven sites across southern Bangladesh. It examines the relationship between assets, livelihood strategies, food security and changes in farming practices.DocumentAdaptation of land-use demands to the impact of climate change on the hydrological processes of an urbanized watershed
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2012The adaptation of land-use patterns is an essential aspect of minimising the impact of climate change at regional and local scales; for example, adapting watershed land-use patterns to mitigate the impact of climate change on a region’s hydrology.DocumentThe future of environmental sustainability in the Taita Hills, Kenya: assessing potential impacts of agricultural expansion and climate change
Fennia, 2012The indigenous cloud forests in the Taita Hills, Kenya, have suffered substantial degradation due to agricultural expansion. Currently, only one per cent of the original forested area remains preserved. Furthermore, climate change imposes an imminent threat for local economy and environmental sustainability.DocumentInvisible guardians: women manage livestock diversity
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2012This paper highlights the important role of women in maintaining livestock diversity by analysing global trends in the livestock sector from the perspective of their influence on gender roles in livestock keeping and animal genetic resources management.Pages
