    South Africa’s food security crisis

    This paper argues that South Africa faces a crisis of rising food prices and food insecurity. Food prices rose by 17 per cent between June 2001 and June 2002, compared to non-food inflation of 7 per cent; the price of maize meal doubled during this period; and further price rises were expected.
